The Burchfield Penney was founded in 1966 on the campus of Buffalo State College to honor the legacy of Charles E. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Erie County helps  children reach their potential through professionally supported mentoring relationships with volunteer mentors.  The agency offers two opportunities to become a volunteer mentor.  Community-Based Mentors set a flexible schedule with their Little Brother or Sister and get together 2-3 times per month, for couple hours each time, to share activities they both enjoy like bike riding, making dinner or playing board games.  Site-Based Mentoring Program volunteers meet at two designated City of Buffalo locations.

Child & Family Services Senior Companion Program enables the frail elderly, and other adults with special needs, to maintain their independence. Low-income individuals who are 55 years of age or older serve as companions to provide non-health-related services such as personal care, shopping, errands, light housekeeping, reading, writing letters, transportation to and from physician appointments, daily visits, meal preparation and respite. Volunteers are paid a modest hourly stipend for their services and receive reimbursement for travel to and from the client's home.

Compass House is a shelter and resource center for runaway and homeless youth.  We shelter up to 13 male and female youth ages 12-17 and our resource center provides nonresidential services for youth ages 14-21.  We use many volunteers and interns throughout the year, mostly at our shelter as youth counselor aids. We also have a safe place program that requires volunteers to transport youth from a safe place location to our shelter.  All of our volunteer positions require 2-3 hour training. Compass House’s mission is to provide homeless and runaway youth with safe shelter and services through a voluntary and mutually agreed upon process in an environment which supports dignity respect and self reliance. Junior Achievement is dedicated to educating students in grades K-12 about entrepreneurship, work readiness and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. The mission of the Riviera Theatre and Organ Preservation Society Inc. (RTOPS), owner of the Riviera Theater in North Tonawanda, is to restore and maintain the theater and its Mighty Wurlitzer Organ while at the same time convert the original theater into a performing arts center to provide an educational and cultural center for music and live theater of all genres. The Riviera is run by a large corps of dedicated volunteers along with a handful of staff members. Driver Aides – assisting clients on and off the van, carrying groceries, etc. Dispatchers – answering one phone line, scheduling rides, etc.
